Chapter 1: The Cat Who Knows the Index
Rain hit the library windows like someone pitching coins. Noah pressed his forehead to the glass, watching the street turn silver and then blur. He had meant to be home ten minutes ago; instead he’d ducked into the old brick library because the rain had a smell—metal and something colder, like a page that had been forgotten too long. The glass fogged under his breath. He liked the way libraries smelled: dust and glue and the soft, ink-thin tang of promises. Today even that smelled urgent.
“You’re still here,” said a voice that sounded like the click of a fountain pen against the rim of a mug. Noah started. The librarian, Ms. Voss, stood in the doorway to the children’s room holding a stack of picture books, her cardigan dripping. Her hair was a dark halo, streaked with silver, and under the fluorescent lights her eyes were an unblinking gray.
